Dear Startups, Lunch Matters.

I recently read this fascinating log by a man who went 30 days without solid food, just consuming Soylent. On day 15, he had a deep, hard-hitting realization:

"The process of eating solid food creates space, breathing, and slowness. It creates perspective"
Josh Helton, 2015

This is important. Critical.

Taking a half hour out of a busy day to grab a satisfying lunch is an important ritual - in my case, one that can make/break the second half of the day. Most startups don't focus sufficiently on this micro make-or-break part of the daily routine. Startups are great at providing perks like free catered lunch, but there's only a small amount of organizational thought going into this process. In fact, at this point, it's largely outsourced to companies like Zesty, Eat Club etc.

That brings me to my sesame-ginger-tofu problem, a productivity killer. Zesty's salad bar is great, except if you're a vegetarian. I don't know what restaurant is responsible for this, but: Zesty's sesame-ginger-tofu is basically liquid nitrogen treated, vulcanized rubber manufactured to look like Tofu. With great seasoning of course. It's not good lunch. Nobody deserves to eat cold, hard, Tofu as part of an important meal ritual.

At the face of it, this looks like a glorified review - but my point is the same as Josh Helton's.

The lunch break matters, and deserves organizational attention at par with the office internet connection.
